THE SHIBORI SERIES

These abstract quilts combine fabrics patterned by shibori techniques.  Shibori is a resist dyeing technique, where the fabric is bundled to restrict the dye's ability to reach the entire fabric.  The fabric can be folded and held tightly within a clamp. Alternatively the fabric can be stitched; when the thread is pulled tight the resulting folds keep the dye from penetrating the bundle.  With careful folding or stitching the pattern is quite controllable.

Some of these quilts (“Water 2” and “Burgeoning”) experiment with changing the shape of the quilt – deviating from the usual rectangle or square.
