Jill Ault: Fiber and Drawing

Gallery: Transparent Quilts

The work here is called "quilts" because quilting techniques are used. And they are "transparent" because the viewer can see all the layers at once, because an almost transparent fabric, silk organza, is used. The quilts are created by sewing together many small pieces of organza into a fabric layer. The constructed fabrics are sewn together into two or more layers and so the back of the quilt can be seen through the top.

I work with white and black organza, dyeing and patterning the fabrics. I use shibori resist, silk screen printing, and printing photographs on the fabric with a computer. I also use discharge which removes the color from the fabric.
