Jill Ault: Fiber and Drawing
These quilts are arrangements of fabrics which have been hand-dyed and patterned. Many of the fabrics are patterned using shibori dyeing. A piece of fabric is tightly clamped, pleated or stitched into a folded bundle and then immersed in a dyepot. The dye attaches to the fabric only on the outside of the bundle; it cannot penetrate into the center. The arrangement of folds determines the pattern. In addition, some of the fabrics are printed using a silk screen stencil.
