Jill Ault: Fiber and Drawing
Patchwork is the foundation of traditional quilting. A block (here usually a four-inch square) is constructed of small pieces of fabric which are sewn together to form a motif. The motif is repeated again and again to make a pattern. As a quilter, I find it very satisfying to sew a stack of blocks, varying the fabrics, and then play --arranging them in various ways, until I find a juxtaposition that's is surprising and unexpected.
These quilts use cotton fabrics, sometimes commercial and sometimes hand-dyed, and are machine pieced and machine quilted. They are true quilts -- a sandwich consisting of a pieced top, cotton batting, and a plain backing, all stitched together.
